Acceptable Use Of The Internet By Students
NOTE TO PARENTS: The Board of Education of the San Francisco Unified School District is pleased to offer your student access to the world wide web and eletronic mail (e-mail) services from computers at your students school. The intent of this offeris to enhance your student's academic development and skills in using media that are commonly found in all aspects of our daily lives.
Access to the World Wide Web and e-mail services, commonly called the Internet, will enable your students to contact hundreds of libraries, databases, and organizations to seek information in the form of text, pictures, sounds, and motion pictures. Students can also exchange messages with students, friends, peers and adults throughout the world.
Families are cautioned that some materials accesible on the Internet may contain text or images that are innacurate or offensive. Even though your student will use the Internet for learning, it is possible by accident or intent that he or she will see objectionable things. Although school district teachers and technicians are taking reasonable steps to prevent students from seeing innapropriate things, it is impossible to eliminate all objectionable things all the time. Teachers and other responsible adults will supervise students at school Parents and guardians are expected to supervise students at home. The San Francisco Unified School District supports and respects every family's right to decide whether or not their students will have access to the Internet.
It is assumed that all parents and guardians will want their students to have access to the World Wide Web and e-mail services provided by the school district. More and more teachers are expecting their students to use these services to conduct research and correspond with adults and other students regarding their learning activities. The school district's Curriculum Content and Performance Standards suggest many ways that students can use on-line services to enhance their learning. Just as the World Wide Web is becoming a wide spread medium for news, business, and government services it is also becoming a very important medium for learning by students and adults of all ages.
